Review & Description

With winter drawing near, her savings exhausted and her lover lost, Lea Mere leaves home to seek her fortune. She chooses to return to a country she left five years before, hoping to find some summer sun and perhaps to rekindle an old romance.

Lea takes a job managing the remnants of a small company that has just been taken over by a large and corrupt corporation. By day she wrestles with the dark side of corporate politics, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. And by night she experiences the pleasures of Australia’s glorious Gold Coast, in the company of a man she might come to love.
‘It turned out to be one of those perfect evenings. The fat prawns dripped with butter, and tasted of garlic and the sea. The meat was perfectly cooked; the outside seared to a firm, caramelized brown, and the inside tender and juicy. The salad was just right, sharp leaves, sweet fleshy tomato, the soft salty buffalo mozzarella, and the tang of balsamic cutting the oiliness of the local olive oil.’

Lea is both clever and bold. But will she fail like her predecessor?

The underlying theme of ‘The Song of Leanne’ is based on the great French epic ‘La Chanson de Roland’. Chapter headings are taken from Robert Browning’s poem ‘Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came’.

This story is guaranteed to be free of serial killers and pedophiles, but may contain the odd corporate sociopath.

Jennifer Mortimer worked as a senior executive in Europe, America and Australasia for many years before becoming a writer. Her books draw on her experiences as a successful CIO in the corporate world, and include her sometimes unconventional views on management. She now shares her time between a villa in Wellington, New Zealand, and a castle in the South of France.

‘The Song of Leanne’ is the first book in the Lea Mere trilogy and is followed by ‘A Fatality in France’ and ‘Long White Cloud’.
